FAQ

Tips for Survivors

Self-Care Tips for Survivors:

  • Eat regularly and avoid sugary foods, caffeine, and alcohol or drug consumption.
  • Maintain a regular schedule, if possible.
  • Try relaxation techniques such as listening to music, deep breathing and meditation.
  • Seek out support from friends, family and counselors.
  • Walk, swim, or engage in other forms of exercise.
  • Try writing thoughts and feelings in a journal.
Tips for Feeling Safe:
  • Trust your feelings.  If you feel uncomfortable about a situation, even if you are not sure why, trust these instincts, and try to leave or get help.
  • Be honest and assertive about what you need and how you feel.
  • Don't be alone with someone who makes you feel anxious or scared, or even uncomfortable.
  • Protect your personal boundaries. Someone "accidentally" touching you or not listening to your requests to move away may be testing you to see how much you'll accept. Being safe is more important than being "polite".
  • Leave the situation if it feels uncomfortable.  Always carry enough money for a phone call or cab fare.
  • Say "No!"
  • Yell: Take a deep breath and do a powerful yell from deep inside you. It will draw up your own energy, as well as scaring the person, and will let other people know that you need help.
